Definitely a must watch. It’s a trip. But what I loved most was the solid blocks of complete songs.

I too have this feeling often and didn’t know there was a word for it. I have been so inspired by all these wonderful movies depicting those music legends of the 70s and 80s and it is also real nostalgia! I felt very fortunate to have grown up in the 80s with all the optimism and joy coming through all that music. It just doesn’t seem like the kids today are having that same joy that we did but maybe I am just middle aged??

Thanks Dave. I appreciate your faithful readership. And I haven’t caught up with Rolling Thunder Review yet. I’ll get right on it. Thanks for the reminder.

This perspective you bring today, especially the “forward-facing nostalgia” of sehnsucht“ is most welcome in a popular would view seemingly locked into a narrow inward looking perspective.

Any alternative backward-facing nostalgia is not where it’s at, in my view of the Kingdom of God and as a disciple of Jesus. He personified “sehnsucht”.

Keep up the great work Mike.

It’s funny ’cause I feel like Dylan, for example, is the music of my youth too; I’m 37 but grew up listening to Dylan through my parents.

I had exactly that same feeling you describe (sensucht) watching Scorsese’s “Rolling Thunder Review” recently on Netflix – it’s amazing; watch it if you haven’t. I was struck by the simplicity of the times (I mean, would you ever see a star of Dylan’s fame driving the tour bus these days?!), along with the simultaneously contrasting chaos. It felt like a some kind of “time capsule of the past/future”.

Perhaps the visceral power of musical storytellers is that they have the ability to tell us the ugly truth of how things really are, whilst at the same time somehow evoking a sense of hope despite it all.

Thanks Mike – love your work!
