To understand what Jesus was doing in eating with ‘sinners,’ it is important to realize that in the east, even today, to invite a man to a meal was an honor. It was an offer of peace, trust, brotherhood and forgiveness; in short, sharing a table meant sharing life … In Judaism in particular, table-fellowship means fellowship before God, for eating of a piece of broken bread by everyone who shares in the meal brings out the fact that they all have a share in the blessing which the master of the house has spoken over the unbroken bread. Thus Jesus’ meals with the publicans (tax collectors) and sinners, too, are not only events on a social level, not only an expression of His unusual humanity and social generosity and His sympathy with those who were despised, but had an even deeper significance. They are an expression of the mission and message of Jesus. The inclusion of sinners in the community of salvation, achieved in table-fellowship, is the most meaningful expression of the message of the redeeming love of God.

“Toxic religion places emphasis on doing outward things to show others that God accepts him.” This needs alteration. Perhaps: replace “him” with “its members.”

I love this. I have been practicing a version of dinner church for the last few years. The story’s of love, transformation and faux pas could fill another book. For those who would love a starter manual, I wrote a book called RENEW with 52 topics and discussion starters. I have another 30+ new ones since writing the book. Like any good idea, we have had to revise our meal and discussion several times. Covid caused us to stop but we are finishing up our fall dinner in two weeks. I absolutely love this less reverent form of “church” because people can be authentic and real relationships form.
