Comments on: If Jesus was such a great scriptwriter, why do his movies stink? https://mikefrost.net/if-jesus-was-such-a-great-scriptwriter-why-do-his-movies-stink/ AUTHOR | SPEAKER | MISSIOLOGIST | AGITATOR Sun, 19 Mar 2023 17:47:23 +0000 hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.4.4 By: Nathan Willard https://mikefrost.net/if-jesus-was-such-a-great-scriptwriter-why-do-his-movies-stink/#comment-45176 Sun, 19 Mar 2023 17:47:23 +0000 https://mikefrost.net/?p=28835#comment-45176 I think the general problem with movies about Jesus is that Jesus (at least as most of his followers want to see him depicted) doesn’t make a good movie protagonist. He has no story arc – no inciting incident to resist, no flaw to overcome, which of course means no resistance to the change he must make to complete his journey; which means no tension. And a boring character we can’t really relate to.

The movie must depict Jesus as struggling with an inner conflict which forces him to change – which I think is actually there in his story, but would anger many Christians. This is what needs to drive the plot, Jesus needs to be active, not a passive character who things just happen to.

Or the movie must focus on a different character and their journey in relation to Jesus.

Additional footage was added for a 1979 re-run and broadcast in four two-hour instalments. In the 19 and 1990, the film was re-broadcast on NBC in three instalments of two- and three-hour episodes, released on VHS and DVD as one complete presentation with one set of credits.

Not sure what I’d think of it now. I think Godspell, especially the stage play, is quite inspired and gets the essence of Jesus more than most “realistic” films. So they were good ones I think.

I wonder if “Jesus of Montreal” belongs in here?

And for your Christlike figures theme, it’s hard to go past Calvary, a 2014 film starring Brendan Gleeson. Moving and interesting on so many levels.
