It’s considered a sin. Glad to hear the truth about this great truth . Thank you. Donnie Swaggert told the story behind the song and he had it all wrong. He didn’t say it was two Catholic men who wrote the words Placida Cappeau and Adolph Adams who wrote the music and a Catholic Priest asked Placida to write it. Credit should be given to whom it is due and original words used. Did Placida ever eventually return to his faith in God and return to the Church leaving socialism behind?

Excellent. I love the historical background to this hymn. Magnifique!

“And through all his wondrous childhood He would honour and obey, Love and watch the lowly maiden, In whose gentle arms he lay: Christian children all must be Mild, obedient, good as he.”

I had a sudden urge to tip some chairs and cry heresy. What a horrid, propagandist lyric.

I’ve been looking for a performance of the more accurately translated English lyrics (the ones starting “ Midnight, Christians, is the solemn hour, When God as man descended unto us”).

Every recording I’ve found is either:
(1) the English translation by Dwight; or
(2) the original French lyrics with more literal English subtitles

… but surely someone, somewhere has thought to perform the more literal English translated lyrics?

If anyone on here could direct me to a YouTube video or Spotify link, I’d be super appreciative.

Perhaps Bruce Cockburn’s ‘modern’ Christmas Song captures some of the flavour

“… for it isn’t to a palace that the Christ child comes,
but to shepherds and street people, hookers and bums …”
