I appreciate your thoughts on this subject. To be honest I really struggle with this one. While I agree, it is difficult to envision Jesus carrying a gun, there is also the balance of God’s commands in the OT where violence was actually necessary. I personally feel arms in self defense or defending the vulnerable is acceptable, but I also see the argument against arms. At best it is a difficult ethic to negotiate.

I tend to rely on St Augustine (and other’s) work on just war theory, but even that can fall short because both parties can typically make an argument for just cause. I live in an area that is highly military and I think we have to come up with a better answer than pacifism to speak to the masses. I also think carrying arms has serious ethical considerations. Either stance can turn into a religion if we allow it. I have a good grasp on reconciling the two sides a the moment.
