I’ve never quite thought of Nehemiah’s and others’ prayers in comparison to Jesus’ prayer. The words “love your enemies” have at times come to mind, but my pride resonates with prayers of “get ’em Lord!” It has been deeply true to me that God can take it from us in prayer. Psalm 73 is my favorite. Once absorbed in a sense of unfairness, the writer catches a glimpse of God. He concludes, “As for me, it is good to be near God.” If we experience that transformation, we will have faith that God can heal others too. But we can’t honestly believe that God is enough without first getting real about the crap in life, and allowing God’s presence to soften our hearts. We will be the Church more often if we would do that.
