I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree!!!!! I STRONGLY believe Jesus would have hung out in bars. I worked at a Starbux coffee shop & wondered at times why churches started one in their church building.
One of the names the religious leaders called him was a ‘friend of sinners’ tax collectors. I thought somewhere he was referred to hanging out with drunkards. If I’m about that, I would like to know. But let’s face it many Christian drink alcohol so it would be pretty hypocritical to say they were wrong. And lastly I struggle when people say a place is wrong. Like a bar. K…a strip joint that’s not what I mean. U talked about church in a quote. I wasn’t sure how to comment. B/c I believe when Christian meet for coffee that is church. & the same could be said for bars. Mean it’s not the place. The church is the body of believers. Is a bar in & of itself wrong. When I reached out to teenage mothers I received criticisms. It didn’t bother me. I’ve started writing songs. I intentionally do not want to place in the genre of Christian singer etc. I have loved leading worship, but the songs I’m writing are everyday songs. Short stories. Much like how country music is storytelling. I want to actually perform in bars or settings where there are unchurched, non Christian. Will I feel safe??? No!!! Probably not! That’s not my typical sing & I’m sure I’d c a lot but honestly nothing worse than working w/ teen moms. I put myself in high risk neighborhoods, a few run ins with a boyfriend of one of the girls I stood up too for emotionally abusing her. He was close to my age & big. Suddenly I thought oh-oh I maybe walking out of here w/ a broken arm or black eye.

But it just dawned on me. We asked the very same things as unchurched, non Christians. I’m definitely not say some aren’t ryped to hear a worship gathering. But we’re asking them to come to something uncomfortable. The church building is not church. It’s a building where part of the body of Christ’s meets. And I just REALLY do not want to get pigeonholed as Christian singer. It was interesting. I watched Eugene Peterson who now has passed have a conversation one on one at Eugene Peterson’s home in Montana. They were talking about lament & the Psalms. Bono said what turned him off of typical Christian music. He said, as ex “Why doesn’t some Xian singer write about a bad marriage or hard time in marriage?”
He said, “I feel like there is a lot of trapped artists out there that need to be free.”

Which one doesn’t belong. The others match. All good buddy.
