Some of my fondest memories from my youth took place in our small-town theatre. It had two old, kinda musty showing rooms and it was smack dab in the middle of the town shops. It had character and personality, it never changed, it didn’t have to. It was part of our community. The theatre was part of our natural rhythm, just like the book store, chocolatier, church buildings, toy shop, and market.

Your post got me thinking… ya know how the church has–in many instances–become decentralized in many communities? Large brick and mortar buildings on the fringes of town? Kinda like the 14 theatre cinemas that have popped up all over the place? I can’t help but see a parallel between the two and maybe they both need to work their way back into town, back to where the people are.

It is my hope that once restrictions are lifted and it is safe to be in community again, that folks will cling to that which we once took for granted. To appreciate the joy of, simply, “being” together, to savor the feeling of shared emotions and to revere sharing in the beauty of art and drama and story.

Hope movie theaters don’t die completely.
Maybe once we get back into the swing of things, people hungry for social contact will revive this again!

My last time in cinema was Jojo rabbit. Although it may not be an enduring classic the impact of the big screen and the shared experience of laughter and shocked silences have stayed with me. Also lived Cinema Paradisio although I watched it on a 20 inch tv screen!!!!
