This is a wonderful reminder. Yes, stories are precious!
I would add for anyone who finds writing hard to get a voice recorder or use one on your phone. Or a video camera. Both.
I’ve learned the hard way that people’s voices are unique & hard to describe, at least for me.
A voice recorder, once turned on, can be very easy to ignore & have a regular conversation. Plus easy to share the files if they’re on your phone.
Asking people’s permission is important, of course, but once you say it’s to preserve memories, I think most people are alright with it.
You can also carry a small notebook/pad or use a app on your phone to jot down memorable quotes or memories.

This was helpful and inspiring, thank you Mike! I have been telling peoples faith based stories through radio, TV and now for a magazine, for over 30 years. (I work for a mission and freelance for local and christian newspapers in Norway). And I have come to treasure particularly sharing the stories of the older generation. I can see how much this also means for their families and local communities, where people who know them, and are not believers, will read their stories, simply because they know who they are, or who their parents or siblings are. But I realize I have not been good at writing down the stories my own parents and in-laws told, and neither did they, and now they have passed. So a good and timely reminder.
