As an artist, I cannot help but notice that Pilate’s wife is given an important place in the painting’s composition, what an artist calls a “sweet spot” . There is literally an arm pointing upward toward her!

And this is why men have worked so hard and so long to silence and/or disempower women! Because whilst we may have lacked both voice and reigns historically we have always had highly-developed intuition and the ability to dissolve the veil between worlds. Angels spoke to women and still do by the way and often it is through women that they will try to effect change socially. Men are terrified of women’s superior ability to transmogrify. Thank you for posting this. I believe Pilate’s wife was trying to spare Jesus the pain of Crucifixion whilst at the same time recognizing his divinity where others were so blind.

Thanks for the homily.

At the risk of being super picky – you mention passingly Marg Mowczko’s quote that, ‪”Not one woman says anything against Jesus in the Gospels, this includes Pilate’s wife.” ‬
I think that Jesus mother, Mary, may have said something against Jesus (Mark 3:21 & 31ff).

Have you seen Antonio Ciseri’s “Ecce Homo” – an incredible painting with a key female figure, whom I assume is Pilate’s wife. She is also a contrast to the other characters in the picture. It is one of my favourite paintings to contemplate during Maundy Thursday/Good Friday.
